Coastal Threads Art Prize 2023 ‘Coastal Gardens’ Each year, I focus on creating opportunities around our annual Coastal theme, Creative discoveries to develop new ideas, and bring together new collections. This research about the natural world informs our work and allows textile play! Coastal Gardens opens the interpretation of what this means for makers, designers and creators. The Inspiration could come from a Reef Garden, a Rain-forest Coastline, Wetland Flora or even The Beach. Open to all fibre, thread & textile Artists. The Art prize accepts entries representing any use of fibre, threads & textiles and encourages the artist to explore art quilting and textile art practices. I am sure you will agree this collection is stunning and will now travel for 12 months sharing the artists talents with as many as I can...Congratulations everyone on a beautiful Collection for 2023. "BLUE INSPIRATION" The Coastal Threads 2022 challenge was to create a blue-inspired quilt, 30cm square representing any use of fibre, threads & textiles, encouraging the artist to explore traditional twists and/or non-traditional practices. This week was judging week for the quilts n this year’s Coastal Threads challenge The 2 judges were Kerrie Hay from BERNINA Australia and well-known award-winning textile artist Susan de Vanny did an online judging procedure that worked beautifully. The quilts were all professionally photographed so they were of very high quality onscreen visually, the images were sent to the judges after a week’s deliberation together picked their top 5. A video of each judges top 5 was made showing construction, front and back as well as sides and sent to them in a group chat, they then chose the top 3 prize winners. The main comment was this This is a beautiful stunning collection of entries and the decision was very hard, The judges will both be in Brisbane for the quilts first "show" That's the next exciting news... Judy Newman from Expertise Events (after a convincing conversation with Elizabeth Dubbelde... thank you Liz for your belief and pleading our case even before the quilts were all in) has asked for the Coastal Threads Art Prize 2022 quilts for exhibition at this year’s Australian Quilt Convention AQC in Brisbane May 26-29 at the Brisbane Exhibition Centre on South Bank Brisbane.... I hope some of you will be able to visit and share this with others as this raises the profiles of Textile Art and creators so we can continue to organize these collections in coming years. I am also in talks about another major show in October and will keep you updated on social media about that. My aim is to always show the collection as far and wide as possible but I am very protective of who gets them as we don't want any issues with care and safety of your precious works. Merry Christmas Book Mark Gift…
Thank you for being here and supporting all that’s going on! I have made this PDF page with bookmark of my coastal quilt; you can print it out on card or paper and stick to both sides of card… to use for your enjoyment while reading…or gift to someone special. Happy New Year Caroline Happy Stitching This little idea is a simple way to take a household item and use images in a sewing project...
Made to share as a way to create while in lock-down. Happy Stitching The Little BoHo Rainbow This was a fun little framed project to make and here it is for you to enjoy as well... The cotton lace fabric in the background has been in my stash for so many years I almost forgot about it safely hidden away, but whats the good of it unless its out and showing off. I used it in a subtle way with a sheer overlay to soften the textures and coffee coloured beige and add a smooth layer over the lace to work as well....always pushing fabrics in different ways to change it up! I have decided once again to offer some limited kits with the fabrics to complete this little Rainbow piece. So first in best dressed with the kits and because the kits are small limited numbers I am handling them personally by email so that is how you get one... BUT! I have added the requirement sheet for all necessary gear to gather from your stash to complete your project, it is all listed. So go enjoy making your Rainbow in either this BoHo style or mix it up in your own colours and share this with your friends and sewing groups... its fun to make!
Little Fabric Kit I have a limited number of little fabric kits for this workshop that I set aside while making the project... And willing to part with some of the LACE Fabric! So if anyone is interested in using what I did to make my picture the little fabric kit is $45 posted in AUSTRALIA only Please email for your kit and the details. (apologies to my international clients its just too hard and expensive to send internationally ATM) The Digital Cloth Emagazine This digital e-magazine offers the reader a glimpse at artists and creators from across the globe. Happy Holiday to you all... I have been busy writing and editing another little tutorial for you all to play with over the holidays and share with your groups and sewing buddies, or make as gifts for your friends and family. The design for this little Christmas tree came from my dear friend Elizabeth Dubbelde in 2009 in a Christmas Card and with her permission I used it as a design to stitch out the 3D embroidered little tree. The PDF link below has a short tutorial to give you ideas on how I made this and the drawing supplied thanks to Liz for allowing me to gift it forward to You. We hope you enjoy the process to make your own 3D Tree decoration.
There is also lots on offer in the Special Holiday issue 2 out December 2020 and all the other issues of the Emagazine. The Digital Cloth Emagazine
The Digital Cloth Issue 6 Wow here we are at issue 6 and another bumper issue out with the cover feature with Ian Berry UK Artist that designs his artworks in Denim.... Yes like your jeans! how amazing that all those blues become such an exquisite art-form! I have been watching Ian for many years and to have him join us here at the Digital Cloth is just fabulous. Ian tells us about his art, the movement he started with his young son Elliot in the UK called #IClapFor, he also shows us the imagery from his vast array of incredible works and a peek at how they are made. Following on from the #IClapFor movement we share a story on 'Pin Your Thanks' which features many celebrity designer pins that are sold to raise money for NHS in the UK. We bought some of these pins and have them ready to share with you as a reader competition where you will write and tell us your experiences watching, working or know a front line worker during the pandemic here in Australia to win a pin to hopefully give that person as a heartfelt thank you. We hope to bring you some of these stories in a future issue as well. Ian Berry created the 2 denim textile artworks of clapping hands for the #IClapFor movement... Wait till your see how they were shown across the world... Get the whole story in issue 6. Issue 6 is once again full of amazing stories and artwork from creators, designer and artists from all over. We are proud to bring this issue to you and hope you enjoy reading it, connecting directly and supporting these artists. Follow them on social media, visit their websites and shops or where they sell at markets, in galleries & maybe at exhibitions. Its an awesome experience to be able to meet virtually, connect and buy directly from an artist/creator and we hope the introductions we make here at the Digital Cloth help raise the profiles of our Contributors. Hover over the image to see the Creator. The Issue 6 Complimentary Workshop This issue I am offering a complimentary workshop project called 'WILD LEAVES' A 17 page step by step project download that is available to Readers on purchasing issue 6 and adding the CODE from the magazine to download for free.
